Sage, Seeps and Secrets

Posted in 'gills, Badass Flies, Basss!, Maps of the World, Night Ops, stuff fly fishermen love on June 11th, 2008 by Wally

Fly fishermen love rumors. There’s always some sort of scuttlebutt buzzing around the fly shops and bulletin boards but the best scoop comes from the field. When an old timer fishing with a forty year old Johnson spincasting outfit tells you about the places he fished back in the day you best listen. You’ll know the real dope when you hear it, “it’s not on a map but…”
null

Out in the desert a little water goes a long way. Spread throughout a few hundred acres of potholes, cuts, islands, beaver huts and bulrushes swim an untold number of basss. There’s bluegill too but they’re done spawning and the big gills seem to have disappeared from the shallows. The bass are found in the deepest, shadiest pockets, tucked back into the tules and near the beaver huts.

This time of year bass don’t begin to think about food until sometime in the evening. Hoping for some dual species action you tie on a medium sized popper at around supper time – 6:00pm for you city folk. The idea being that something like a Shenandoah Slider is small enough for a bull ‘gill and big enough to fetch Mr. Basss. For once that kind of inescapable logic actually pans out and you pull in the first of many bass you’ll catch this night.

“It is not to be thought that the life of darkness is sunk in misery and lost as if in sorrowing. There is no sorrowing. For sorrow is a thing that is swallowed up in death, and death and dying are the very life of the darkness.”

-Jacob Boehme

Rumors about trout, that elsewhere would be discarded out of hand, in the desert take on an attribute of belief that is as inviolate as the concept of the Trinity. This drainage may have been stocked with browns 25 years ago and that’s enough to go on.

Scientists have found a bunch of long-tailed macaques (steady now, that’s the easy joke) in Indonesia that fish.

We're gonna be rich, boys!

Groups of long-tailed macaques were observed four times over the past eight years scooping up small fish with their hands and eating them along rivers in East Kalimantan and North Sumatra provinces, according to researchers from The Nature Conservancy and the Great Ape Trust.”

Four times in eight years? Why, that’s barely a dalliance. And no gear? What the hell do they have to argue about during all that downtime? I’m beginning to doubt their commitment to monkeydom.

Up yours, pink boy.

Meijaard, a senior science adviser at The Nature Conservancy, said it was unclear what prompted the long-tailed macaques to go fishing.

Ahhhh, there we have it, they’re fishing writers. Welcome Bobo, Chim-Chim and Snowflake.

Where have you gone, Kilgore Trout?

T-minus three weeks and head exploding.

Didn’t think I was gonna be there to get my candy at the North Pacific chinook magic show parade this year, but alas, today was the day of days insofar as dirtbag news. even the sun shines on a turd, my old man used to say. today the old man was right about turds.

salt fresh BC kings on the swing in just a few measly weeks, fellas, with some good gotdam potential for the wily steelheads as well if’n i can get my mojo working proper.

Dirtballing it on the lower Dean, a short heli ride from there. Gonna be good to see the kids come home.

Spey Nation Update

Posted in Laser Awesomnality, Revelry, Spey, The Globetrotting Angler on June 10th, 2008 by Wook

Three weeks ago or so, Buster told you about Spey Nation, an upcoming spey clave happening in Central New York on the Salmon River on June 21, 2008. At the time there was some uncertainty about the location, but no longer. It’s happening at the Pineville Bridge Angler’s Access Site and Boat Launch at the intersection of Rts. 48 and 13, just west of the village of Altmar.

Busta can you take it to the bridge!

Here’s a Google Maps link, and the Directions page from the official site. It starts at 9am and ends when you leave. Here’s a list of accomodations. What, you got something better to do? It’s a party at the boat launch! Free food! Mow the lawn later!

The chow is sponsored by The Oak Orchard Fly Shop and Buffalo’s Flying Bison Brewing Co..

Hippies who bathe.

Beer is good food.

Also Raffles! Fly swap! Door prizes! Exclamations!

Oh btw, I’m told that we’ll be using the 2nd Edition of the Dungeon Master’s Guide, not the 3rd (psssh, right, the 3rd, get serious. Geeks).

Here’s that Bob White artwork again, just because I like to look at it.

Tailwater

tail·wa·ter – [teyl-waw-ter, -wot-er]
–noun
1.
a fishery created at the outflow of a large dam, where the size of the reservoir creates a steep temperature gradient, with colder water stored at the bottom of the reservoir near the outlet.
2. the water in a tailrace.
3. surface runoff resulting from crop irrigation.
4. a convenient place to park your overheated tail when it’s ninety-fuck degrees and stupid percent humidity and big peabrained trout are rising all round to everything other than your fly, the pricks.

Hello trout. Enjoy my ass.
