Saying Fugazi rocks would be an understatement. I am old enough to have enjoyed the coming of age of the most important band in Rock history but missed it because of where I was at the time in 1977. Fugazi on the other hand was handed to me by Brave New Waves on CBC Radio just after their first EP I never left the waiting room.

early 80’s , St. Paul, MN. Minor Threat shows up for an all ages gig. Height of the stooopid straight edge bullshit, which many tried to force Minor Threat into. back doors of the van flip open, and much to the astonishment of a dozen or so straight edge kids standing around, Ian falls out, accompanied by dozens of empty beer cans. punk fucking rock.

…yeah Jerome, I was working on 3 cups of brewed Organic Mexican beans and was a bit heavy handed. When I was 12 (’64), my friend and I would make guitars out of cardboard and lip-sync Beatles songs in his garage. I’m a fan. Later on I followed the “proto-punk” bands and individuals. I’m a fan of them to. Now I listen to a lot of Jazz and Classical…. go figure.

I was force fed the Beatles. I can appreciate the influence and what they were doing at the time. I just cant get into anything other than the White album, some of the trippy stuff. Never been much of a pop fan. Still listen to anything from Pantera to Fugazi to Widespread Panic to the Black Keys to Dr.Dre to Alt-country to Jazz and classical also.

  11. kinni Says:

    you’re very eclectic there, Jerry.

never cared for the beatles till i tripped for two solid days with an old LP of Revolver (at work). made a believer out of me. loved em ever since. oh, and you gotta trip and watch lawrence welk, too. it’ll all make sense…

I was at one of those shows. My friend John booked them in Peoria IL. A handful of skins showed up and started fucking with everyone. Ian made everyone sit on the floor before they would play another song. Everyone sitting on the floor watching Fugazi. It was so awesomely strange. The live discs these segments are from are totally worth picking up.

Before I became obsessed with fly fishing, I was obsessed with hardcore and punk music and played in a band who played shows with Fugazi on multiple occasions. Ian used to get a lot of shit for being “self-righteous,” but he nailed it most of the time. A solid guy and a great band.

The world needs more Fugazis and fewer boy bands.
